It’s 2017 and you’ve had a wonderful Christmas, New Year and Valentines. But now the decorations have gone and the bleakness of January is over. Your home is looking a little more tired without the bright or chic and you want nothing more than to strip the whole room or house and start again.
If you are a DIY expert with time on your hands, or know of someone who is, is free and can work to your demanding schedule, then go ahead. Otherwise, it might be easier to think a bit smaller. Luckily, there are a few design trends that are pretty easy to incorporate into at least part, of most homes that might just be enough to banish those post-holiday blues and make you love where you live again.
“At the start of the year, a lot of people want to make a change and that can include in your home,” said Wimbledon estate agent, Robert Holmes. “It doesn’t always have to be a big change though, and when it comes to décor, less can be more and give just the right balance of new and old, to put a smile back on your face.”
Colours to Consider
If you want to change the colour of a wall or add some colour with a picture or print, there will be plenty of cool blues and shades of white to choose from in your local DIY shop. Inspiration for these colours has come from the UK’s coast line. Think of the sea, foamy waves or even a beautiful print of some of the sea-life that resides off the British coast.
These should all be readily available, as its been pinpointed as a 2017 trend by a number of stores and designers. Of course, for many of us, the sea and coast also conjures up deep greens and sandy shores so why not take inspiration from your own take on a coastal trend?
“Trends can be really useful if you’re planning to re-decorate, but you should never make a change you don’t like, just because someone else says it’s ‘in’,” said Fulham estate agent, Lawsons & Daughters. “While having a home that looks great is important for many people, it’s also your home and that should be reflected in the design and colour choices you make, too.”
Add Texture and Contrast
If you’re more in a soft-furnishings or accessories change around mood, we can help with that too. North Africa and Morocco are set to be the big influences in 2017. Not necessarily bold colours, but the patterns associated with that region of the world.
This could work particularly well if you’ve travelled a lot and like to include that part of your life in the décor of your home. You’re sure to have some personal pieces, but they might not be particularly useful in the home. Instead, you could combine your own details with some useful furnishings that are sure to be readily available to buy.
If bold patterns aren’t your thing though, another option that’s going to be around is natural stone and mineral-based accessories. Pretty stone vases and lamps could brighten up or refresh a corner or even a room.
“We all go through periods when we don’t really like what we see when we look around our home,” said Knightsbridge estate agent, Plaza Estates. “But, with just a few changes or additions, a home or room can look very different and much more pleasing.”
